STOP CRENO NOW!

C.R.E.N.O (Classification by Race, Ethnicity, Color, and National Origin) is an initiative put forward by UC Regent Ward Connerly that will ban the collection of information about race, ethnicity, color, and national origin in nearly all California government organizations and agencies. If passed, CRENO will make it impossible to do research on race, to study or prove discrimination, and to gather important statistics related to health, education, employment, housing, social services, policing, and criminal justice.

The designers of CRENO believe that racism will go away when we stop talking about race.  In reality, CRENO will facilitate a much more covert, sneaky, socially embedded, and difficult-to-prove form of racism.  California voters will decide on this issue in March of 2004 (or possibly as soon as November 2003).  It is time to wake up the California electorate and stop this lethal initiative in its tracks!

WHAT TO DO

  • Encourage institutions, local governments, media, businesses, and organizations to use their voice, power, constituencies, and resources to oppose CRENO.

  • Organize on a grassroots level to create a force of concerned citizens to spread information through communities, schools, and workplaces.

  • Through media, informational materials, public events/presentations, education, and voter registration drives, prepare EVERYONE to vote NO on CRENO.
